Cultivating peace in daily life.

Outline for small group gathering

Here's a sample outline you might find useful for getting together with friends to focus on cultivating peace:

1.    Opening (5 minutes)

Invite a group member to read a favorite prayer, poem or vision for peace to begin the meeting.

Acknowledge the purpose of getting together.  Here’s one idea:

We gather here today/tonight to encourage and support
each other in making peace a priority.
We invite the spirit of peace
to influence our thoughts, feelings, and actions toward the realization of peace.
We strive to cultivate peace in our hearts, our homes,
our workplaces and communities, our nation, and our world.
We recognize that we’re part of a diverse and dynamic grassroots network
of peace-minded men and women of all ages reaching across the world.
May our efforts to cultivate peace contribute to a tangible and lasting peace for all.

2.    Meditation (10 minutes)

The Rhythm of Peace Project promotes healthy living as a foundation for peace.  A few minutes of relaxation or meditation supports a transition from other activities, helps to focus attention, and releases stress.  Take 5-15 minutes for a meditation on peace, depending on the interests of your group.

Meditate for peace.

3.    Support actions for peace  (45-60 minutes)

Discuss the questions:

What actions will you take this month for peace?
What are the challenges and results of your actions for peace so far?

(Give everyone who would like to speak a chance to do so.  Use a timekeeper, if helpful.)

Take action for peace.

BREAK (10 minutes)

4.    Expand the rhythm of peace community (10 minutes)

Encourage each other to invite a friend or co-worker, family member or community group to participate in the next cycle of the rhythm of peace that begins on the first of the month.

Suggestions:

Use the Tell A Friend tool to let people know about the rhythm of peace.
Send the Rhythm of Peace book as a gift.

5.    Closing (5 minutes)

Confirm the date, time, and place of the next meeting.

Close with another reading—a prayer, a piece of poetry or a blessing such as:

May we each find the strength and resolve to express our unique contribution to peace.
May we support and encourage each other along the way.
May we discover and celebrate the true spirit of community.
May the path to peace unfold for all...
